About This Project
LEADS believes in creating safer spaces and brighter futures for the children of Sri Lanka. Our work with vulnerable children and communities is aimed at rectifying social injustices – from child abuse, abject poverty and socio-natural disasters to lack of access to development and equal opportunities. To achieve these goals, LEADS intervenes in the areas of:

The aim of this programme is to restore the self-worth and dignity of survivors of abuse against children in the aftermath of the traumatic experience of various forms of abuse. The overall programme focuses on providing residential and non-residential counselling and support services for Child Survivors of Abuse (CSOA). Referrals are made to the residential centre through the Juvenile magistrate courts, the Department of Probation and Childcare Services and through other government institutions.
The proposed activities aim at providing residential services through the respite therapeutic centre. The services include therapeutic care for children through individual counselling and group activities as well as providing them with a child safe therapeutic space. During their stay, children follow a routine which includes in-house education, play, arts and crafts including activities to uplift their emotional state. Children are taken care of by residential house mothers as well as administrative and support staff. The medical needs of children are taken care of by the case workers which include accompanying children for relevant assessments and ensuring physical and mental health.

Why give to this project?
At present residential counselling is provided through two respite therapeutic centres.
1. Kedella: Based closer to Colombo which has the capacity to provide therapeutic care for up to 16 children at a given time.
To increase the capacity and provide sufficient space for the children in Kedella, LEADS was able to construct a new building. We are now able to accommodate 20 children at a given time.
As we move into the new building, we are in need of the items below:

2. Kuyilaham: The “Kuyilaham” programme is now being run in Nanthavanam, Kilinochchi. At present, there are 16 children under the 3-month therapeutic care provided by LEADS. Nanthavanam is considered as a safe home for them.
3. Atchuveli Certified School & Remand Home: Children in remand homes are detained for various reasons such as: suspicion of murder, attempted murder, arson, theft, quarrelling, disobedience, straying, use of liquor/ drugs and other offences. Victims of abuse and sexual harassment, child labour and those abandoned are also placed in these Centres. Sixteen programmes are conducted for a period of 6 months on a weekly basis at the Atchuveli Certified School & Remand Home. Each programme consists of a lesson, a reflection period and games.
LEADS is looking forward to renovating the counselling room which would be child-friendly for the boys.
