Founded in 1988, CBE International works to eliminate the dominance and abuse of girls and women resulting from theological patriarchy portrayed as biblical. Addressing power imbalances, CBE promotes the biblical message that God calls women and men of all cultures, races, and classes to share authority equally in service and leadership in the home, church, and world.
CBE collaborates with global pastors, churches, institutions, and NGOs to eliminate sexism, racism, misogyny, gender-based violence, and human trafficking; to raise the status of women; and to promote human flourishing. We educate and advocate through online multimedia resources (in many languages), journals, blogs, podcasts, articles, videos, and audios in addition to local chapters and yearly conferences.
Since 1988, CBE has worked with supporters and ministry partners from over 100 denominations and 65 countries to dismantle the patriarchy practiced and taught as biblical.
The system of patriarchy (men holding authority and excluding women from it) has been entrenched in Christian theology through centuries of traditions and misguided teachings and practices. This has marginalized and excluded women’s God-given gifts and service—a practice that hurts everyone. Through misinterpreted/mistranslated Bible texts, girls and women are devalued, and women’s gifts and leadership are undermined, resulting in a limited talent pool and abuse.
CBE engages the original context and language of Scripture to show that the Bible teaches that women and men are equally created in God’s image for shared governance in all spheres, based on the teachings of Scriptures such as Galatians 3:28: “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
CBE advances the gospel by equipping Christians to use their God-given talents in leadership and service regardless of gender, ethnicity, or class. CBE is the only nonprofit organization promoting women’s equality as a biblical ideal to Christians worldwide. Our work addresses theological and historical errors, and flawed translations of Scripture that devalue girls and women and limit their voice, agency, and God-given gifts that families, churches, and communities need to flourish.
CBE publishes a magazine and an academic journal with articles on issues related to a biblical view of women’s equality and mutuality in the home, church, and world.
Priscilla Papers is CBE's award-winning journal and provides interdisciplinary scholarship on topics related to a biblical view of women’s equality. Read articles at https://www.cbeinternational.org/primary_page/priscilla-papers-academic-journal/
CBE's award-winning Mutuality magazine + blog offers inspiration, encouragement, and information on practical issues related to Scripture and the mutuality between women and men. Read articles at https://www.cbeinternational.org/primary_page/mutuality-blogmagazine/
Content from these publications is available for free, along with 4,700 online resources in 30 languages at cbeinternational.org. Print editions of Priscilla Papers and Mutuality are also available through a subscription.
“I have been a sponge, soaking in your articles and reading the many books I found on your website. I pray that God would use you to help me heal from the many years of feeling frustrated and abandoned by the church.” —CBE supporter
For centuries, Christians have relied on flawed, sexist Bible translations that contribute to the devaluation of girls and women relative to boys and men. Thus, CBE launched a Bible translation initiative to examine and correct flawed translations of biblical passages that are most often used to demean and subjugate females to male authority and abuse.
An expert team of Bible scholars—women and men from diverse ethnic, racial, geographic, and denominational backgrounds—have translated 500+ Bible verses with commentary explaining and promoting a more exegetically-sound, gender-accurate, and accessible English translation of crucial texts historically mistranslated and used to subjugate women worldwide. A well-known academic religious publisher has offered CBE a contract to publish this book.

At CBE’s international conferences, we bring voices together to consider egalitarian issues historically, biblically, and socially. Attendees gain awareness and the ability to address the abuse of patriarchy within their spheres.
It is crucial that we provide scholarships so more people can attend CBE’s international conferences. These scholarships help students, pastors, and others with limited financial resources participate. When women and men understand women’s biblical value and equality, they are better equipped to flourish in their life, work, and studies.
The generosity of donors like you help provide access, strengthen conference programming, and equip participants with awareness and tools to confront the harm caused by patriarchy.

Each year, the Alvera Mickelsen Memorial Scholarship (AMMS) provides financial assistance to women pursuing graduate degrees in ministry fields related to preaching, communicating, writing, youth ministry, pastoral, or nonprofit work. Given the challenges and inequities women face in the church, Christian workplace, and academia, the AMMS was created to help women answer the call to ministry. Thanks to generous donors, CBE has been able to award twenty-three scholarships since 2018. The AMMS is made possible through the generosity of Alvera’s family and donors like you!

CBE acts where Christian faith, theology, global humanitarian work, and women’s equality intersect. Because individuals consult faith leaders in times of crisis—and given women’s historical marginalization and abuse—human flourishing depends on faith leaders who support women’s dignity, agency, and equality in the church, home, and world as a reflection of biblical teaching.
Women's equality is not attainable without addressing underlying cultural and faith-based beliefs that devalue and disempower women and girls, making them vulnerable to marginalization and abuse. CBE has collaborated with ministry leaders and other cultural change agents in Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe to address flawed biblical teaching that result in an imbalance of resources and power between women and men, and girls and boys. By providing culturally appropriate biblical resources on women’s dignity and equality, CBE is instrumental in partnering for human flourishing globally.
