Clinica Esperanza is a clinic on the Island of Roatan, Honduras, that helps the poor and underserved receive the best possible medical care, and no one is turned away for lack of ability to pay.
Early on, it was discovered that many times when patients seek medical care elsewhere, they have an additional cost to purchase their medications. This is a great burden for the poor, who must then decide between their needed medications or food for their families. Oftentimes, a family will go hungry in order to provide medications for their children, or a family member doesn’t get their needed medications in order to provide food for their family. From the beginning, Clinica Esperanza has provided medications to the best of our ability.
During the past several years, this has been especially difficult as many Islanders depend on tourism for their livelihood and have been out of work due to the pandemic.
For the past two years, we have also had an increase in patients while the public system is only caring for emergencies. This has drastically increased our need for both prescription and over-the-counter medication. We have also been providing food vouchers for L. 500, about $20 US, to help with their food needs as well. Our annual budget for medications is over $50,000 US, and we also depend on and receive donations to keep this cost low.
We need your help to continue to provide the medications needed for our patients. If you are visiting Roatan in the future, please consider bringing some over-the-counter medications in your suitcase, such as Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen, or Aspirin 81mg, to name a few. Or consider helping us by donating funds to provide much-needed diabetic, hypertensive, and antibiotic medications. Either type of support would be extremely appreciated!
